Another Reason for the Black graduation gap in higher education

Thirty-nine percent (39%) of the students of color who responded to the survey reported feeling
uncomfortable on campus because of their race. The most frequently cited uncomfortable locations for students of color were “fraternity and sorority certified housing,” “Green Street,” “on the bus” and “classrooms and labs.” Over half of participants (51 percent) reported experiences of stereotyping in the classroom.

If you believe that some students need academic help


Beware of this www.completecollege.org group funded by Bill Gates which is acting a lot like the American Legislative Exchange Commission (ALEC) and selling their wares to unsuspecting and unknowing legislatures.  Find out where they are in Illinois before it becomes a mandate to discontinue developmental education in place of this program.

This lack of Developmental Education is worrisome

Some group called Complete College of America funded by Bill Gates is acting like the American Legislative Exchange Commission (ALEC).  They are moving quickly through the states to provide a plan that eschews developmental education in place of placing students in regular college courses.  They even have 150 page report  that says developmental education (they call it remediation) does not work.  We need to start contacting our legislature before it comes to Illinois as a mandate.

Blacks in Illinois Higher Education

In case you have not read the 2014 IBHE "Underrepresented Report to the
Governor and General Assembly,  you should if you want to know what is happening to Blacks in higher education IBHE reports (access and diversity)
  • An overview indicates that the Report now has little recent information.  As far as I can tell the latest data are 2007
  • Black Student Enrollment in higher education declined by over 8%
  • Black completion rates are unacceptably low
  • Black faculty representation in public higher education is essentially eliminated                                                                                                                       For more recent data see The Status of Blacks in Higher Education 2013
  • What about spending on Black programs that appear to be unsuccessful?
 

We are looking for explanations for the decline in Black Enrollment and the continuing gap in achievement

The graduation rates of Black students continue to lag behind their peers, including their Latino peers.  Can you supply any explanations.  Let's keep your research articles coming.  One such answer may be racial stereotyping.
